Big life decisions are always hard. The stress and fear of missing out is often hard to ponder through on your own, like trying to peer into the hazy fog of the future.

Most people don't give this step the deep thought required.

People are influenced by cultural conformity and parental pressure (parents have their own view of the world and is not always in their child's best interest). I mean it’s hard. How are you supposed to know what to do at that stage in your life?? Hell, I only discovered what I wanted at age 30.

When making this decision a pros and cons list just doesn't quite cut the mustard like it's meant to. It’s hard enough to find the right words to put on the paper when your whole life is in front of you.

I am always comforted by thinking of these decisions as a highway with exit and entry ramps instead of the classic crossroad metaphor. Each major decision is an exit lane. Once you're off the highway there is always, ALWAYS an entry ramp back on. Whatever happens after the decision is made there is always time to go back. (I know that's a lot of metaphors, but stay with me)

What to do after leaving school is one of these big decisions. In this blog I won't tell you what to do (I only try to facilitate enlightenment not to push it into the reader) but hopefully I can make the decision easier for you.

Are you ready for the secret answer……

Here you go……

It doesn’t matter what you do.

Hahahah that is the big secret. If you’re asking yourself how that can be the answer? It’s so simple. Well, welcome to life because the best answers are simple. It doesn’t fricken matter what you choose to do. Start a job, go to uni, apprenticeship, tafe, travel, army. The real challenge is adapting to what life throws at you and working towards your next goal. Never lose sight of that.

How do you get good at adapting to life? You just start. Make the first decision. Pick something from the list above. Anything. I spent my first year working in an abattoir. You will learn more from the first 6 months of doing than 6 years of contemplating. And always remember the highway, if it’s the wrong choice for you, or your goals change there is always an ON ramp to get back on the highway. Nobody is stuck.

Just take a chance, make a decision, make a plan, and get on with it.

Until next time

P.S. if you wanted to purely make a financial choice of a high paying job with excellent employment opportunities, university (just make sure its AI resistant) or a trade straight out of school makes sense. But life is much more than making money (besides real wealth is not created by working a job but by owning a company/share in a company)
